Fenix 21700 Flashlights
The 21700 is the workhorse cell of current Fenix lights. It is a little thicker and longer than an 18650 and usually holds more energy: most Fenix 21700 cells are 5000mAh to 6000mAh, against 4000mAh for the largest Fenix 18650. That headroom is why this page runs from the PD40R V3.0, a 3,000-lumen all-rounder that still rides in a holster, up to the LR36R search light. Want something slimmer? Compare the 18650 lights.
Built for long nights
More capacity buys more time on the useful middle modes, not just a bigger turbo number. On a January dog walk that starts in the dark, or through a long power outage at the cottage, that is what you notice. Cold slows any Li-ion cell, so carry the light under your jacket and keep a charged spare in an inner pocket. Lanterns such as the CP50R run two 6000mAh cells and double as a power bank for a phone. Our Canadian winter lighting guide has more cold-weather tips.
Charging and spare cells
Many lights here charge through a sealed USB-C port in the body, so the cell never has to come out. Others ship with a cell that has its own USB-C port, such as the ARB-L21-5000U in the TK16 V2.0. If you rotate spares or run two-cell lights, a bay charger is tidier; see our chargers. Fenix 21700 cells are part of our Canadian stock, but buy the cell named on the product page: high-output lights draw hard on turbo, and a protected Fenix cell matches the current and length the light was designed for.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a 21700 light worth it over an 18650 light?
- If runtime matters more than pocket size, yes. Most Fenix 21700 cells hold 5000 to 6000mAh against 4000mAh for the largest Fenix 18650, so a light can stay on its useful modes much longer. The trade-off is a slightly thicker, heavier body. On a jacket, duty belt or in a vehicle that rarely matters; for jeans-pocket carry, look at 18650 or 18350 lights.
- Can I use any 21700 battery in a Fenix light?
- Use the cell named on the product page, or a Fenix 21700 listed as compatible. Cells differ in length, button or flat top, protection and maximum current, and high-output lights pull hard on turbo. Fenix cells carry protection circuits and pressure vents. Cheap unprotected or rewrapped cells can be too short to make contact, too weak for the draw, or simply unsafe.
- How do 21700 lights cope with a Canadian winter?
- Like any Li-ion cell, a 21700 gives less in deep cold, so the light may step down sooner or show a lower battery reading. Keep it under your outer layer between uses, start the day fully charged, and carry a warm spare in an inner pocket. Charge cells indoors at room temperature, never in a freezing truck or garage.
- Do the headlamps and lanterns here use the same cells as the flashlights?
- Many do. The 21700 headlamps, lanterns and bike lights on this page take the same cell format as the flashlights, so a household or crew can share one set of spares and one charger. Check the exact Fenix cell model on each product page before you buy extras, because some lights specify a particular version.
