Fenix Lights with a Built-in Battery
These lights carry a sealed battery you recharge and never swap. The trade-off: no swap
When a built-in battery is flat, the light is done until you plug it in. For a keychain light or a kitchen-drawer light that is no problem; for a long night of searching or a multi-day outage it is. Plan around it: top up regularly, keep a power bank in the vehicle, and pair a built-in light with one that takes a swappable cell, such as a 21700 light. Built-in cells also age, and you cannot replace them yourself, so capacity slowly drops over the years.
Cold and charging
Built-in Li-ion and Li-polymer cells slow down in the cold like any other, and there is no warm spare to swap in. Keep a keychain light in an inner pocket rather than clipped to the outside of a pack in January, and do not charge a frozen light: bring it indoors and let it warm up first.
