Fenix Lights with 100–249 m Throw
This is the all-rounder range: enough reach to see the end of a driveway, the next bend in a trail or the back of a rural lot, with enough spill to light the ground at your feet. Many of our headlamps land here, including the HM60R V2.0, and so do compact everyday lights such as the E06R Pro. If you are buying one light for the house, the yard and the occasional trail, this is the place to start.
Reach and spill, in balance
A light in this range has a defined hotspot but a generous spill, so it works across a yard and at arm's length. Expect to recognise a mailbox or a trail marker well inside the rated figure; the number marks where the beam fades out, not where detail ends. Lumens alone do not decide throw: the E40R makes 5,000 lumens and stops at 242 m because it floods a broad work area, while the slim LD22 V2.0 reaches 214 m from 800 lumens with a narrower beam.
Who it suits, and what it gives up
Rural dog walks, checking a shed or barn, snowshoe trails, campsite chores and most trades work sit comfortably in this band. Headlamps like the HM60R V2.0 pair a spot and a flood for exactly that mix. On a budget, look at the LD12R, which runs on AA or 14500 batteries. What you give up is long-distance detail: you will not pick out a canoe across the lake. For open water and fields, move up to 250–499 m, or compare every model on our headlamps page.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a headlamp with 170 m of throw enough for night trails or snowshoeing?
- For most trails, yes. The HM60R V2.0 spot reaches 170 m on its highest setting, enough to read the trail well ahead, while its separate flood lights the ground close in without glare. Use the lower spot modes for a steady pace and save the top setting for moments when you need to look further ahead.
- Are the bike lights here for seeing or for being seen?
- Both kinds are here. The BC28R and BC26R are front lights rated 180 m and 169 m to light the road or trail ahead, and the BC28R comes with a matching tail light it controls wirelessly. The BC06R is a small rear light with brake sensing, rated visible at 100 m, meant to make you seen rather than to light the way.
- Which light in this range makes a good first light or gift?
- The E06R Pro is small, rechargeable and reaches 160 m, which covers most around-home and vehicle needs. The LD12R is a sensible budget choice that runs on AA or 14500 batteries, handy when there are already AA cells in the drawer. For hands-free use, the HM60R V2.0 headlamp is the one we suggest most often.
