Fenix Lights with 500–999 m Throw
This is a short list of long-reach flashlights, from search-class lights to the compact PD40R V3.0. They are built to light something specific a long way off: a channel marker, a distant tree line, a person on an open hillside. The PD40R V3.0 is the most portable way in at 500 m, while the LR40R V2.0 and LR50R V2.0 combine a long-reaching spotlight and a wide floodlight in one body.
Spot and flood in one light
At this distance a pure thrower can leave you in the dark at your own feet. Several lights here solve that with two beams. The LR40R V2.0 reaches 900 m with spot and flood together, and its floodlight alone puts out 12,000 lumens for the area around you. The HT32R pairs a 740 m spotlight with a flood and separate red, green and blue light: red keeps your night vision, green and blue help with signalling and marking. Expect to recognise a person clearly far closer than the rated figure.
Before you buy
These lights are larger and heavier than everyday carries, and some use dedicated power rather than standard cells: the LR40R V2.0 has a built-in battery and the LR50R V2.0 uses its own battery stick. Ask whether you need this reach every week. If it is occasional, a 250–499 m light carries far more easily. If you need still more, the 1,000 m+ page lists the specialist throwers, and our longest-throw guide compares them side by side.

Frequently asked questions
- How far away can I actually recognise a person with a 500 m light?
- Much closer than 500 m. The rating marks where the beam fades to about full-moon brightness, enough to notice that something is there, not to tell who it is. Expect to identify a person at a fraction of the rated figure, and less in rain, fog or snow. That is why search teams pair a thrower like the TK35R or HT32R with a wider light for close work.
- Is the PD40R V3.0 a good first long-range light?
- Yes. It reaches 500 m from 3,000 lumens on a single 21700 battery, in a body you can still hold comfortably in one hand. It also has a 30-lumen low for close work. It is our usual suggestion for someone moving up from an everyday light who wants serious reach without the bulk of a searchlight.
- Why do some lights here have separate spot and flood modes?
- A beam tight enough to reach 800 m or more lights only a small circle, which makes walking or working close up awkward. Lights such as the LR50R V2.0 and LR40R V2.0 add a separate floodlight, so you can scan a far shoreline and then light the ground around you without carrying a second light.
