Fenix Lights with SOS Mode
SOS mode flashes the international distress pattern for you, three short, three long, three short, so you can set the light down, stay warm and let it do the calling. It belongs on any light that lives in a go-bag, a snowmobile kit or a car for winter highways. This list includes handheld flashlights and headlamps; for a fast attention-getter rather than a distress code, see lights with strobe.
Why SOS runs below full power
On most lights here, SOS runs at a moderate output instead of turbo, which is a smart trade when you may be waiting a long time. The PD40R V3.0 flashes SOS at 350 lumens against a 3,000-lumen maximum, and the LD22 V2.0 signals at 100 lumens against 800. Lower output means the signal keeps going far longer on one charge, and in real darkness even a modest flash stands out across a lake or a clearing. Our emergency go-bag guide covers what else belongs in the kit.
Headlamps that can signal too
A headlamp keeps your hands free for the work that comes before rescue: setting up shelter, tending a fire, checking a map. The HP25R V2.0 is a work headlamp with spot, flood, red light and SOS, and a 60-degree tilt to put light exactly where you need it. The HM65R-T V2.0 is a lightweight trail running headlamp that adds SOS plus an emergency whistle fixed to the headband, a sensible pairing for solo runners and hikers. More options are in our headlamp range.

Frequently asked questions
- What does the SOS pattern look like?
- It is the Morse code distress signal: three short flashes, three long flashes, three short flashes, then a pause before it repeats. The light runs the sequence automatically, so you do not need to know Morse code. Rescuers, pilots and boaters recognize it as a call for help rather than someone simply using a light.
- Do I need SOS if my light already has strobe?
- They do different jobs. Strobe is a rapid flash that grabs attention right now. SOS is a recognized distress code, usually at a lower output, that can run for a long time while you wait. For a vehicle or backcountry kit, SOS is the more useful of the two; for everyday carry, many people prefer quick strobe.
- Which light on this page is easiest to keep in a vehicle?
- The LD22 V2.0 is a good fit: it runs on its included rechargeable cell or two AA batteries, so a flat cell after a cold week is not the end of the story. It has SOS at 100 lumens plus a strobe, and at 800 lumens maximum it is bright enough for changing a tire on a dark shoulder.
