Fenix Lights with Under 100 m Throw
Not every light needs to reach the far shore. Everything on this page is rated under 100 m, for one of two reasons: lanterns spread their output around a whole site instead of down a trail, and small pocket lights simply have less to throw. The CL28R lantern makes the first point: 2,000 lumens, yet only 58 m of throw. Both kinds suit a tent, the space under a kitchen sink or a campsite on a winter evening.
Why low throw can be a feature
Beam distance is measured to the point where the light falls to 0.25 lux, roughly the brightness of a full moon. So a light rated 58 m is not giving you working light at 58 m; it is giving you moonlight there. Up close, though, a flood beam is even and comfortable, with no harsh hotspot bouncing back off a page, a breaker panel or fresh snow. That matters most on your head: the HM23 V2.0 runs on a single AA and covers camp chores without glare. Our throw vs flood guide explains the trade in more detail.
Lanterns, keychain lights and small backups
This is a mixed list: lanterns such as the CL30R and CL28R, tiny rechargeable pocket lights like the E03R V2.0, the HM23 V2.0 headlamp and a bike tail light. One thing to know: for the CL26R Pro, CL30R and CL20R PRO, Fenix quotes beam diameter, the width of the lit circle, not throw, so their metre figures are not comparable with a flashlight's. All of these give up reach. If you need to see the end of a laneway or the next bend in a trail, step up to the 100–249 m range.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does a 2000-lumen lantern only reach 58 m?
- Lumens measure total light output, while beam distance depends on how tightly that light is focused. The CL28R spreads its output around it to light a whole campsite or room, so little of it is concentrated in one direction. A small flashlight with a focused reflector can out-throw it with a fraction of the lumens, but it would light a far smaller area.
- Is under 100 m of throw enough for walking at night?
- On a lit street, a sidewalk or a short path down to the dock, yes. On an unlit trail, a rural road or in the bush, most people find it limiting, because usable light ends well before the rated distance. For those walks, a light rated 100–249 m gives a better balance of reach and close-up spill.
- Which lights here make sense for a power outage?
- A lantern is the most practical outage light because it lights a room rather than a spot. The CL26R Pro and CL30R can also act as a power bank to top up a phone. Pair one with a small pocket light such as the E03R V2.0 for moving between rooms, checking the furnace or finding the breaker panel.
