Fenix AAA Flashlights
This is a short list of two headlamps, and neither is an AAA light in the usual sense. The HL45R and HL32R-T each run on their own 1900mAh rechargeable pack and accept three AAA batteries as a backup. If you want a small light for a pocket or keyring, look at built-in battery lights; for more headlamps that take a common spare cell, try 18650 lights.
Why AAA as a backup
A rechargeable pack gives these headlamps their output and long runtime on low, but packs go flat at the worst time: the last night of a canoe trip, or a storm that takes the power out. Three AAA from the kitchen drawer get you home. Expect less from AAA than from the pack, and in cold weather alkaline AAA fade fast, so keep them in an inner pocket. Both packs charge by USB-C, and the AAA are not included, so add a set to your kit.
Which of the two
The HL32R-T is the light, simple one: 800 lumens, 107 g with its battery, a magnesium body and two separate switches for its two light sources, made for running and fast hiking. The HL45R is the bigger trail headlamp at 1,000 lumens, with a rotating focus ring for spot or flood, red light, and a wave-to-switch gesture sensor for gloved or dirty hands; check its product page for the current ship date. Frequently asked questions
- Does Fenix make an AAA-only flashlight?
- Not on this page today. In the smallest Fenix lights, AAA has largely given way to built-in rechargeable cells that charge by USB-C and weigh less. The headlamps here accept AAA as a backup to their rechargeable pack.
- Can these headlamps run on AAA alone?
- Yes. Fenix lists three AAA batteries as compatible for both, though they are not included. It is a backup arrangement, so expect lower performance than from the 1900mAh pack. Use fresh cells of the same type, and take them out before storing the headlamp so a leaking alkaline cannot damage the contacts.
- Which is better for running?
- The HL32R-T. It weighs 107 g with its battery, and Fenix designed its headband and its frequency-sensing mode, which adjusts brightness with your speed, for running. The HL45R is heavier and suits hiking, paddling and camp work, where its focus ring and red light earn their place.
